The photo below shows how set length of the spacers.
When coring, I always have the banjo set tight to the headstock so it is out of the way.
(If the banjo is between the cutting bed and tailstock... it is always in the way)
The spacer butts to the banjo.
(If you want to remove the banjo when coring, then the spacer would then butt to the headstock)
The jaws of the chuck represent the outside base of the bowl blank.
The spacer's length is such that the cutter of the coring knife is set to 1" to 1 1/2" distant from the jaws of the chuck, depending on which size of coring knife being used.
This will create the desired thickness in the bottom of the bowl.
#1 knife 3/4" thickness
#2 knife 1" thickness
#3 knife 1 1/4" thickness
