WOODLOT HARVEST STUDIO
One of a Kind Bowls
by Geoff Kelk
My bowls are made to be used every day for many
generations and turn into a family heirloom. Over
many years of service, one of my bowls will take on a
beautiful, rich patina achieved only by the passage
of time.
Sizes vary from 12 to 26 inches in diameter and up
to 12 inches deep. They are prefect for use as salad
or fruit bowls and make very special wedding gifts.
Although my bowls make ideal accent pieces, they
are made in such a way so they can be used heartily
for everyday tasks for generations to come!
Each of my bowls starts as a rough block of 'green'
wood from the log. On the lathe, it is turned into a
thick, roughly formed bowl, which is slowly dried for
six months. It is then re-turned on the lathe and its
final shape is revealed. My 'one of a kind' bowls are
made from maple, cherry, birch, walnut, beech and
ash.
After the bowl completed, I rub food grade walnut
oil into the wood several times a day until it is
saturated. A light coat of beeswax applied allowing the
bowl to be maintenance free until put into service.
My bowls can be hand-washed with soap and water.
Once in a while before putting it away, take a paper
towel and rub in your favorite salad oil.
Woodlot Harvest bowls are made in such a way that
allows the oils from the salads to penetrate the
wood, thus preserving the bowl.
My studio is about an hour or so northwest of
Toronto in the Orangeville/Shelburne area.
